Mr. Render seems inclined to close against us history's warning and instructive page: to this, however, we cannot agree, feeling the force of the adage, "that history is philosophy teaching by example." We must, therefore, claim the liberty of asking, what corroboration it affords to the charge, which truth and Scripture alike force us to bring against that church, of being guilty of the blood of those saints whose bones lie scattered on many a mountain cold. To enter at any length on this painful topic would require far more space than we can afford, our references must be consequently brief. While admitting that persecution has raged, Mr. Render denies that it constitutes a principle of what he designates the Catholic--meaning, of course, the Papal--religion, requesting his readers to bear in mind that both Roman Catholics and Protestants disclaim it. We have already proved, that although he asserts this repeatedly, yet the laws of his own church confute him. They are intolerant in the highest conceivable degree, denouncing death on every one, without exception, refusing to succumb; and these denunciations she has practically enforced, and enforced solely on religious grounds. We may refer, in illustration of these remarks, to an instructive page of history, to which Mr. Render also alludes, the Crusades, or holy wars as they were termed, carried on for years against the Albigenses and other dissentients from the Church of Rome, in the south of Prance. From the principles of that church they emanated, by her Sovereign Pontiffs they were commanded, under her consecrated banners they were carried on; the priests of the church preached them from every pulpit; her religious orders, monks and...
