He affected to give the Turk I engaged to put me on board several directions, which the Turk did not understand, and pulled off to a large French transport. Here I was tossing about in a caique at the mercy of an obstinate Turk, who would pull alongside of the wrong steamer. I bellowed out Scutari and Niagara, and the people on board pointed to a large steamer with a red funnel getting under weigh. Fortunately, she had taken a lumbering sailing transport in tow, and after a sharp pull my caique got within hailing distance. The step-ladder had not been drawn up, and at the risk of being swamped, I laid hold of it and held on until my bag was safely lodged thereon. Directly I got out of the caique, away she drifted, with my silk umbrella and some other trifles, which, together with his fare, the honest boatman kept for his great exertions. Upon the decks of the noble transport I found 650 Turkish hammils or porters, taken up, it would seem indiscriminately, from the streets of Constantinople, and about 200 convalescent soldiers returning to their several regiments in the Crimea. On the upper deck I recognised a few officers I met at Missiries' Hotel, two Austrians, and a medical man en route to inspect and report on the state of the hospitals. F It was no easy matter to find the purser, and when I did find him, he was beset with applicants for berths. I mentioned to him I was to have one of those berths intended for the Duke, and found a very nice and newly-papered cabin near the saloon; afterwards I gave it up to a particular friend of the captain's, an officer returning to his regiment before his health was quite restored...
