Last Sunday we were employed. in considering the nature and effects of true repentance: a subject most suitable to this season of Lent, which the Church has set apart for more serious self-examination. You must remember that daily transgressions call for daily repentance; but in a world where earthly things are too apt to engage so much of our thoughts and affections, it is of great value to the Christian to be called to enter upon this more solemn season of watchfulness and prayer; so that he may be better prepared to commemorate the sufferings, death, and resurrection of our blessed Saviour. The subject that I propose for our instruction to-day, is the exhortation given to us by St. Paul in the twelfth chapter of his epistle to the Hebrews, first verse. Let me hear you read it. A. "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us." Heb. xii. 1. Q. Besides that evil nature which we all inherit from Adam, there is, with almost every person, some one or more sins to which he is particularly liable: what are these called in Scripture 1 A. Besetting sins. Q. Shew me by a few examples from Scripture that you rightly understand the meaning of this expression 1 A. The besetting sin of Jonah was fretfulness of temper. Jonah iv. 1--9. In Peter it was the fear of man. Matt. xxvi. 69--74. In Judas it was covetousness. Luke xxii. 3, 4, 5. In the Pharisees it was self-righteousness. Luke xviii. 9. In Nebuchadnezzar it was pride. Dan. iv. 29, 30. Q. These examples are brought forward merely to explain what is meant by besetting sins; not to give any encouragement to looking for faults in others; on the contrary, what ought a knowledge of our own he...
