Cicero, who in a speech (the first he ever made from the Rostra) had employed his eloquence with the people to procure for Pompey that unprecedented commission, which was given him by the Manilian Law, employed now his consular and personal influence with the Senate to obtain for him unprecedented honours. At the motion of Cicero, the Fathers decreed a public thanksgiving, in Pompey's name, of ten days, which was twice as long as had ever been -decreed decreed before to any General, even to Marius himself, for his victory over the Cimbri And upon the receipt of the public letters,which brought the account of Pompey s success in Judgq.
