The only other alleged contradiction to the Old Testament in St Luke's genealogy is in what concerns Salathiel. It is said that he invented Chaldaism (i. e. astrology): and his sons worshipped him as a god, and set up his image: and hence the worship of images began." Michaelis, in Supp. Lex. Heb., pp. 2184, 5, understands the very name Tp (which he thinks here an epithet of Salah) as denoting a metallic image, alleging the Arabic a blacksmith, and applying this to Gen. iv. 22, &c.; referring also, in a special Essay on the subject, to this tradition concerning Cainan. Other testimonies to the same tradition are given in Dr John Gregorie's Dissertation, entitled "Ka'ivdv Sevrepos; or, a Disproof of him," pp. 91, 92--who seems seriously to conceive them all true as referred to the antediluvian patriarch, Cainan the son of Enos, whose sepulchre is asserted by certain Rabbies to have been seen in ...
