Excerpt: ... M.P., F. R. S., Governor of Massachusetts Bay, 1757-1760 Author of the Letters of Junius, 17'67'-1772 Royal 8vo, about 560 pages, with 30 Portraits and Facsimiles of original letters, Views of Boston and of New York in the XVIII Century, and reproductions of old maps of that period showing how North America was divided among the Indian tribes. BY CHARLES A. W. POWNALL Thomas Pownall was made Governor of Massachusetts by William Pitt, whom he instigated to the despatch of Wolfe's expedition to Quebec. He played an important part in the struggle with France for supremacy in America, which is here described from a new point of view --the personal experiences of the Governor of Massachusetts. In the same way the conditions of life in Boston and New York are dealt with and particulars are given of many of the leading personages, among them Benjamin Franklin, who was an intimate friend of Pownall's for thirty years. New light is also thrown on the events which led up to the War of Independence which Pownall, almost alone, strove to avert during the years he was in the English Parliament. In 1774 he almost succeeded in doing so by detaching Lord North, the English Prime Minister, for a time from the policy of King George III. As a branch of this political work, Pownall employed Sir Philip Francis to write the Letters of Junius from his drafts or dictation, and was thus the real author of those Letters, whose origin has never hitherto been known.
