Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IV. LADY LASCELLES. ACURIOUS trio sat that evening in the large, scantilyfurnished drawing-room at Hardington Court. There was Miss Letherby, a tall, thin, stooping figure, badly dressed as usual, holding close to her short-sighted eyes the coarse ugly piece of knitting that was her "company work," and suffering under an uncomfortable sense of repression, because she dared not, in the presence of her visitor, use those peculiar religious phrases which had grown to be almost inseparable from her conversation. Blinded by her own enthusiasm, she was sadly apt, poor lady, to cast her pearls before swine; but old experience had taught her that it was worse than useless to look for any responsive feeling from Lady Lascelles. This terrible person, as she was regarded by most of her relations and friends, was a little old woman with a yellow wrinkled face, small keen dark eyes, and numerous tight little curls of snow-white hair arranged in tiers all round her forehead. She was now, as always, splendidly dressed, and lay back luxuriously in a low arm-chair, playing with a costly fan. Mr. Letherby was tall, thin, and short-sighted like his daughter, but unlike her he did not stoop. He was one of those persons who hide (often with complete success) a good deal of stupidity, and still more of nervousness, under a lofty and impressive demeanour, and a pompous manner of speech. He wore double eye-glasses, which could never by any means whatever be induced to remain upon his nose for five minutes together, on which account he had contracted a habit of keeping one hand raised in order to catch them as they fell, and his conversation was marked by long pauses, because it was impossible to him to talk while engaged in readjusting his glasses. 39 "What a long time i...
