To the Queen Madam, IAm so much overjoyed with this I meali to let your Majesty know, that it seemeth to me as a dream, and makes me fear it is too good a purpose, and too happy, to come to an issue. The King hath not stayed the coming of Augiers, as he first intended, but resolved, Monday last, with his juncto counsel, to let me seek my fortune at sea; and to that purpose is willing my friends here should assist me in it. Your Majesty knoweth how many there hath been formerly that have professed to you and me, that if the King would give them leave, they would do great things for Us: now we shall see whose professions were real or not, seeing the King is willing. Your Majesty will know what is fittest to be done in this; I shall acquaint all my friends here with it. My lord Craven hath already offered me ten thousand pounds for his share; if they all do this, it will be of great consequence. However However, your Majesty will please to let the States know this, and to enquire what assistance I shall expect from them; and to advise with the Prince of Orange about the de- signs of two or three forts, that the King may chuse, according to the strength we shall be able to gather here: but for all this, I beseech your Majesty to consider whether I mould attempt any thing, before I be sure that the French will embrace my interest; if I should, it would get them the better conditions in the treaty at Collen from the Spaniards, and I should have profited nothing. towards the recovering of my country; Spain being mighty enough, when me is in peace with others, to expel me out of any thing I mall have got: and if I should attempt upon Flanders, it will be necessary the States should second me with their army, and oblige themselves not to make any treat...
