People sometimes have a difficulty in understanding the reason why we speak of the deadly sins as seven in number--neither more nor less: and this difficulty seems often to be increased by the consideration of what the list contains, and still more by its omissions. It is not always easy, for instance, to distinguish between anger, envy, and pride--the manifestations of each so often run into one another, and the division seems a cross one. Moreover there is such a thing as a righteous anger: there are circumstances under which not only is a certain kind of anger not sinful; but its absence would be wrong. There is such a case as that of Eli the priest who incurred the anger of Almighty God, and His severe punishment, because he was not angry with his two sons Hophni and Phinehas, when their lives and conduct merited severe chastisement. there is the case of the whole Corinthian Church, to whom S. Paul writes in terms of the strongest reproof2 because of their insensibility and absence of indignation at the sins which had brought such scandal upon the Gospel and cast so great a stumblingblock in the way of the conversion of the heathen; and 1 i Sam. ii. 27, sqq. '1 Cor. v. 2, sqq. there is the precept of the same Apostle, "Be ye angry, and sin not."1 On the other hand, some have been perplexed by the omissions in the list; in which no express mention of such sins as lying, stealing, cruelty, fraud, and many others occurs. These difficulties arise, I think, from a mistaken conception of what is meant by these seven names under which Catholic theologians have classed all deadly sin.
