Excerpt: ... on Commencement Day, July 19, 1865, the Secretary having announced the death of brother James Ingersoll Grafton, who fell in battle near Averysborough, N.C., March 16, 1865, the following resolutions were passed by the Class:--"Whereas, at the very close of the war, in the very hour of victory, James Ingersoll Grafton has been taken from us by that Providence whose power is infinite, whose purposes are unfathomable;--"Resolved, That, in his military career, we have seen those manly qualities of character developed, of which we saw the promise when he was witli us. "Warm-hearted and generous, brave almost to recklessness, he displayed, during many arduous campaigns, an endurance, a fortitude, a cheerful, patient valor, which won the esteem and confidence of all with whom he was associated. "In the manner of his death, we see the same strong will and steadfast devotion to duty which always distinguished him. "To the family which has been stricken with this great loss at the hour of the country's rejoicing, we offer our teuderest sympathies. (See Harvard Memorial Biographies.) CHARLES EZRA GREEN, son of the Hon. J. D. and Sarah A. (Durell) Green, of Cambridge, was born in that city, February 12, 1842. He fitted for College at the Cambridge High School and Phillips Exeter Academy. After graduation, he went to Milbury, Mass., and engaged in the manufacture of rifles, thence to Worcester, in the same business, until November, 1863. In February, 1864, Green went to Readville, as clerk in the depot quartermaster's department, and remained until October; was mustered into United-States service, on January 5, 1865, as first lieutenant, 7th United-States Colored Troops, and joined the regiment in the field before Richmond, Va., as regimental quartermaster.
