Excerpt: ... RIEVAULX-Founded 1131 FOUNTAINS 1132 BYLAND-Founded 1143 JERVAC7LX-„ 1156 The Cistercian Order was founded A.D. 1098, by Robert, Abbot of Molesme, at Citeaux (Cistercium), in Burgundy. It was an offsboot from the great Benedictine community, and the object of its separation therefrom may well be gathered from the letter of the Legate, Hugh, Archbishop of Lyons, sanctioning the removal: "Hugo Lugdunensis Archiepiscopus et Apostolicae sedis legatus Roberto Molismensi Abbati et fratribus cum eo secundum regulam Sancti Benedicti Deo servire cupientibus. Notum sit omnibus de sanctae matris ecclesiae praefectu gaudentibus, vos et quosdam filios vestros Molismensis coenobii fratres Lugduni in nostra presents astitisse, ac regulae beatissimi Benedicti, quam illuc tepide ac negligenter in eodem monasterio tenuerant, arctius deinceps atque perfectius inhaerere velle professos fuisse. Quodque in loco praedicto pluribus impedientibus causis constat adimplere non posse. Nos utriusque partis saluti; videlicet inde recedentium, atque illuc remanentium, providentes in locum alium quem vobis divina largitas designaverit vos declinare ibique salubrius atque quietius Domino famulari utile duximus fore. Vobis ergo tunc praesentibus Roberto abbati, fratribus quoque Alberico, Otoni et Johanni, Stephano, Letaldo et Petro, sed et omnibus quos regulariter et communi consilio vobis sociare decreveritis hoc factum propositum servare et tunc consuluimus, et ut in hoc perseveretis prascipimus, et auctoritate apostolica per sigilli nostri impressionem imperpetuum confirmamus."
