In the lower row, to be sure, where they were still crushed and hustled by the struggling masses aspiring to like places, who were yet cringing, bullying, lying, stealing, doing any thing to gain the coveted prize. Did they forget that they had fought their way over the same road? At all events they tried to do so, endeavoring to assume the confident repose natural to the occupiers of the higher seats, who had been born to the honors, or had them thrust upon them. Did they ever descend through the struggling crowd and find their way to the plain where the simple earnest men and women, not in society, plied their useful toil? No! no! when such came in their path (some of them had been called friends in the old humble days), they looked the other way, crossed to the other side, and passed them by. The occupiers of the higher places were not all such. Indeed, many of them seemed to find their sweetest work and companionship down in the valley among the simple folk. But then their places were secure, for even the most ambitious worldling would never think of aspiring to unseat them, and they had not been hardened and soiled by sordid purposes or mean ambitions. Surely there were those amongst them who had been placed there even against their own wills, only because they were worthy of worship, having done noble things well. But worthy or worthless, noble or small, being as gods, all had plenty of worshippers like unto themselves in spirit. Some, noble and good, worshipping similar attributes which had been crowned by social success, but most, sordid and mean, bowing down to the pomp and glitter of ill-gotten or questionably gotten...
