According to Geoffrey of Monmouth (Book iv. chap. 9,)--for he is the only author we have met with who records the invasion of Britain we have just transcribed--Ctesar, having read the foregoing letter, was advised by his friends not to go into Britain upon a bare invitation of the Duke, unless he would send such security as might vouch for his fidelity. Without delay, therefore, Androgeus sent his son Sceeva with thirty young princes, the sons of chiefs nearly related to him. Upon delivery of these hostages, Caesar, relieved from his suspicious fears, re-assembled his legions, and with a fair wind again arrived off the Kentish shore. Caswallon, who had been occupied besieging Trinovantium and ravaging the country towns, finding Caesar had actually landed, raised the siege, and hastened with all his available forces to meet him. As soon as he entered a valley near Dorobernia (Dover), he saw the Roman army preparing their camp, for Androgeus had conducted them there for the convenience of making a sudden assault upon the city. The Romans, seeing the Britons advancing towards them, quickly flew to arms, and ranged themselves for battle. The Britons also armed and arrayed themselves. Androgeus, acquainted with his countrymen's tactics, traitorously concealed his contingent of five thousand men in a wood hard by, in order that he might, during the heat of the engagement, sally foith and assist Caesar, to the confusion of his lawful sovereign, Caswallon. The preliminary arrangements being ended, both parties approached each other and the fight commenced, some with bows and arrows, and some with swords, so that much blood was shed on both sides, and the wounded fell down thick lik...
