Excerpt: ... LECTURE II. THE CREED. 2 Cor. xiii. 5. Examine yourselves, wketker ye be in the faith; prove your ownselves. The first thing promised for us at our baptism was, that we should to the utmost of our power avoid every sort of sin, whether tempted to it by our adversary the devil, or by the vanities and evil customs of the world, or by our own sensual appetites, the sinful lusts of the flesh. The second part of our engagement was that we Should Believe All The Articles Of The Christian Faith. A right faith or belief is, you know, of the utmost importance. Without faith it is impossible to please God. He that believeth and is baptized, says our Saviour, shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be damned ", and St. John tells us, that he that believeth not is condemned already. It is therefore of great consequence that we should seriously consider, whether we believe or not, that we Mark xvi. 16. 1 John iii. 18. should fairly examine ourselves, whether we be in the faith. 1 The Articles Of The Christian Faith are contained at large in the Scriptures: those articles, however, which are of most importance, and belief of which is most necessary to every baptized person, are shortly brought together in that summary, which is called the Belief, or the ApoStles' Creed. The recital of this Creed forms a constant part of our ordinary Church service, and in the profession of belief in the several articles contained in it you are all supposed regularly to join. There is, however, but too much reason to fear, that very many of those persons, who repeat this Creed with their lips, have taken no pains to understand its meaning;--that many, too, pretend to a belief, which they do not really feel, or which, at least, they do not permit to produce its proper practical ...
