Excerpt: ... LECTURE IX. THE HAPPY RESULTS OF RIGHT PARENTAL TRAINING. Psalm cxliv., 12: That our sons may be as plants, grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace. Home was once a far more dear and sacred spot; for "modern progress" has despoiled it of much of-its former interest and sanctity. Real progress is not to be despised. But in our eager chase after improvements, we should be careful not to leave behind what is more precious than those things after which we are reaching. This caution is doubly needful as regards the good things of home. In the modern increase of our enterprises of pleasure, ambition, and gain, and in the increased facility of travel, we are living more than formerly abroad, and are thereby proportionally weaned from the domestic hearth. And on our return, the multiplication of our occupations and amusements increases yet more our forgetfulness of the family circle. In consequence of these things, the interests and pleasures of the fireside are sadly undervalued and neglected. Yet, nothing left us from the ruins of the fall, is more important to our welfare than a well regulated, happy home. Its archetype is Eden. Its antitype is heaven. No other place on earth, not even the house of God, should be so dear to us. For there our most important duties should be done, and there our richest pleasures enjoyed. Home, such as it should be, is in part described in the words of our text. The description relates to its most important elements, its dearest inmates. In the preceding verse, the psalmist prays to be delivered from evil children, and in the text, to be blessed with those that are good; or sons that shall "be as plants grown up in their youth," and "daughters like corner ston...
