Excerpt: ... YOULGREAVE. Principal Inx.--The Bull's Hani (Winson). Prom Bakewell 5 miles; from Kowaley 5 miles. Youlgreave is an extensive mining village in the High Peak, in midst of a district rich in the most glorious scenery which even Derbyshire can boast. At the time of the Domesday survey the manor belonged to Henry de Ferrars. In the reign of Henry I. it was held, under the Earl of Lancaster, by Ralph de Shirley, from whom it passed successively to the Rossingtons, Knivetons, Barnesleys, and Buxtons, by whom it was sold to the Earl of Rutland, in 1685, and now belongs to the Duke of Rutland. The church is a very large and fine building, with a massive battlemented tower. In it are Norman remains; a singular font; and monuments to the families of Gilbert, Cokaine, Rossington, etc. In the village are several Dissenting places of worship, and an excellent school. Middleton By Youlgreave is a delightful little village about a mile from Youlgreave, unlike which, it is profusely and beautifully wooded. Middleton Hall, a seat of Thomas Bateman, Esq. (now a minor), is a fine substantial building, surrounded by extensive grounds. Fulwoods Castle, the site of which is still to be seen near the road, was formerly an extensive building belonging to the Fulwoods, one of whom was shot in a rock called " Fulwood's Rock" during the Civil "Wars, by some Parliamentary soldiers under Sir John Gell. The manor belonged to the Herthills, and afterwards to the Cockaines, from whom it passed to the Fulwoods, then to the Curzons, Sanders, and Howe, and was purchased from Lord Howe by the late Thomas Bateman, Esq., and now belongs to his great grandson, Thomas Bateman, a minor. Rock Cottage, in this village, is the residence of John F. Lucas, Esq. There are Independent and Primitive Me...
