Excerpt: ... LESSON XXVII. Cigarettes and Tobacco. ONE fine morning a few years since a Wall Street lawyer was giving a message to his office boy, when the lad suddenly fell to the floor in a heap. A doctor was called, and after some effort the stricken one was restored to his senses and taken home. He had been poisoned by cigarette smoking. This set the lawyer to investigating. He soon found that many boys smoked cigarettes. The doctors told him that epilepsy, heart trouble, indigestion, and many other complaints, and not infrequently sudden deaths, result from this practice. He decided to do something about it. He was a school commissioner, and after talking the matter over with some of the principals he started an "Anticigarette League" in the public schools of the city. He thought, if the boys would sign a pledge not to smoke cigarettes until they were twenty-one, very few would ever take up the practice. The league has branches, I think, in all the one hundred and twenty-five or more public schools in New York. It has a constitution and by-laws, officers and a badge, and monthly meetings are usually held in the schoolroom during term time. These meetings are well conducted, with music, recitations, and discussions. Thousands of leagues have been formed elsewhere on the same plan, and probably hundreds of thousands of boys have taken this anticigarette pledge. All this is very good so far as it goes, unless it may give the boys the idea that tobacco does little harm in any other form. This is a fatal defect in the plan, and we would much prefer that our boys should sign and honestly keep a pledge for life not only against cigarettes, but against tobacco in every form.
