Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IX. THROUGH THE VALLEY. RISING up she went towards the Valley and the River. With the love of the King in her heart she left the Orchard and came to the rugged Cliffs between which she had to pass. The farther that she went the stronger and brighter grew her love. She came to the Rocks. They were reddish-brown, and were covered, here and there, with masses of dark Ivy. High on both sides of the dim Valley they stood up, steep and fearful. At the entrance to the Valley was a Yew, dark and solemn. Beneath its flaky branches it was dark even in the twilight. Countless ways, as it seemed to me, led up to that Yew; but only one way went onward from it. The Pilgrims going homeward travelled by that road. With her Olive-branch in her hand she stood beneath the Yew in the gloaming, and gazed earnestly down the Valley. Her eyes seemed deeper and brighter than ever as she gazed. The gloom was so thick that she could see but little. The cold wind rising up from the Valley struck her and made her shiver. She heard the rushing of the River; and for a second her heart failed her; and she said 'I must go back; I cannot go on down this dreadful place; I would rather be in the Desert beneath the burning sun.' Then the King spoke to her ; and she felt His Hand taking hold of hers in the darkness; and her spirit within her lived again and she went on. Round her were many of the Warriors of the King with their Spears and Swords. Thus in the twilight, beneath the Evening Star, she went from the cluster of Palms in the Orchard towards the Valley. The horror of a great darkness lay upon that Valley; and for a second the rush of the Torrent smote her heart into trembling. But it was only for a second.
