First of all we should begin with easy pieces on everyday life, and short stories, fairy tales, easy pieces of poetry, just such literature as would suit a child of a somewhat lower age in its own language. Then we should gradually go on selecting pieces that are a little more diflicult, but still in simple language, and quite within easy reach of the intelligence of the pupils. After the pupils have made some progress in the foreign tongue, and have mastered a small but compact vocabulary of words and phrases denoting objects and ideas well within their natural sphere of interests, a second stage is reached, in which easy historical prose may be read, while the vocabulary acquired before should be retained and enlarged by returning to the subject at regular intervals, and treating it in a slightly different way and from other points of view. At this stage, but not before, a second foreign language might be begun, if thought desirable. In the further progress of the study of the first, care should be taken that a pupil, before finishing his course of study, has read a small number of good texts, giving him an idea of the best modern literature of the foreign nation, and including a few works of the greatest authors of the classical period, which in French would mean Moliere in the first place, Corneille and Racine in the second, La Fontaine, and perhaps a short selection of eighteenthcentury authors; while in English Shakespeare would be essential. A selection made from such a point of view does not exist, and even when good books are published they are not always recognized as such and turned to account. I know...
