OREIGN-BRED horses which have won the Derby form a very small category. There have only been three, to wit, Gladiateur (1865), representing France; Kisber (1876), representing Hungary; and Iroquois (1881), representing America. Kisber was of purely English blood. It was only the accident of birth that entitled him to be called a foreign-bred horse. His sire was Buccaneer, who had been exported from England to Hungary in 1864, and his dart the imported English-bred mare, Mineral. He was the property of a young Turk, Mr. Alexander Baltazzi, and took his name from the royal stud Kisber, at which he was foaled. It is hard, even at this distance of time, with so many things revealed, to size up his form correctly as a two-year-old. In the Middle Park Plate he ran like a 'commoner,' and lost his owner many ' thousands;' but in the Dewhurst, a fortnight later, he beat an excellent field and recouped all losses. He did not run again till the Derby. About this time his owner was in serious financial difficulties, and the horse was mortgaged to Mr. Sam Lewis, the well-known money-lender. The horse, however, won by five lengths, and the amount Mr. Baltazzi won in bets enabled him to get clear of his debts. The victory was popular in a way, but a prejudice against foreigners caused a frivolous objection to be raised, which was, however, at once overruled. He won the Grand Prix at Paris in equally easy fashion; but, though good odds were laid on him for the St. Leger, he failed badly. Not long afterwards he broke down, and probably his poor show at Doncaster arose from this cause. Kisber undoubtedly derived his merit from his dam, who had previously thrown the St....
