It will be recollected that previous to my late visit to England the 5th volume had been carried no further than the 18th number. It was then suspended, with a promise to resume the work, at least so far as to finish the current volume, after the visit should be completed. For several months after my return, the state of my health put it out of my power to resume business, and since this disability was removed, several journeys and other causes, not necessary to enumerate, prolonged the suspension, till I had nearly concluded to close the business without the publication of the remaining numbers. But on more mature reflection I found that even in a business point point of view, some further communication must be had with the subscribers; and that the Repository itself would afford the best medium for this; that to those who had paid the full subscription, the remaining numbers were due, as a debt, and in reference to others, they might be necessary to enable me to collect the subscriptions which are unpaid. And further, that several subjects of importance claimed my attention, and demanded some public expression of sentiment; and lastly, that it is called for by some of the subscribers. I have determined no longer to hesitate, but to commence, and finish the remaining numbers as soon as circumstances will admit. This explanation I hope will be satisfactory, both in reference to the delay, and to the course now adopted, to bring the 5th volume to a close.
