A GUIDE TO THE MANAGEMENT AND INSTRUCTION The erroneous idea which many, who have their sight, entertain, that children who are born blind, or who have lost their sight at a very early age, are incapable of receiving instruction, has frequently occasioned either the most culpable neglect or the most absurd treatment of such unfortunate children, and when they are afterwards received into Schools for the Blind, sometimes presents, to the teachers, greater difficulties than even the blindness itself, and not unfrequently prevents the accomplishment of the object in view, or, at least, renders it painfully tedious. Hence, about the year 1830, the Silesian Association for Instructing the Blind, felt it their duty, to the parents and teachers of blind children, to print and distribute, gratis, throughout Silesia, a short Guide, or instructions, for the use of such as might have the management or education of those sightless unfortunates. The happy results of this step have clearly shown themselves in the progress made in learning, by such pupils, when afterwards received into our Institutions for the Blind; whereas, on the other hand, many Blind children, whose parents had no knowledge of these Instructions, were found in the most deplorable state of ignorance when brought to the schools, even at seventeen or eighteen years of age. In 1837 a member of the Prussian Government caused, at his own cost, a new and enlarged edition to be distributed, gratis, through the Prussian provinces. In 1839 a third edition was published and distributed, at the cost of the State.
