A line which I shall use the freedom to turn so: "Their's solid pudding--mine but empty praise." "Qui capit iUe facit," and those whom the cap Jits are welcome, as the volunteer heralds of such glorious deeds, to proclaim the blushing honours with which they are now invested. To one and all of them, I shall fearlessly address this valediction, " stant nominum umbrae," go and sin no more, lest a worse thing befal you in the fourth edition of this little book, where I may be compelled to declare, "ecce homines! in proprii-s personis." From the jealousy and unjustifiable opposition which Dr. Gilchrist has recently Shown towards my publishing an edition of Major Taylor's Hindoostanee Dictionary, and from certain expressions in the above quotation, I have good reason to suspect that the latter part of it is addressed to me; if so, I do not hesitate to assert that it is one of the most ungrateful, false, and cowardly attacks, that ever was made by one man upon another. Ungrateful, because I have been the best friend to Dr. Gilchrist that he ever possessed, and have rendered him most essential services, false, because I have not stolen any of his goods, nor have I offended against the laws of gratitude, honour, or common honesty; and cowardly, because his attack is made in an underhand assassin-like manner, which gives a stab and endeavours to avoid detection. Too yon galiyara ghuer ko shuoq se de; Humew koochh kuhega to hota ruhega. Meeh. "Give this abuse, if you please, to some other person; what you say of me will recoil on yourself."
