This little book has been designed to meet what I believe is a felt want. The subjects referred to are of increasing importance ;but the study of it is almost prohibited to those who cannot spare the time to study applied mechanics in the lump. There are many excellent works on the subject in English, French, and German, but the majority are too mathematical for the yoimg engineer to tackle at first. I have endeavoured to produce not an exhaustive treatise, but a clear account of the methods and principles of Hydraulic Engineering as at present practised, in a form that can be easily grasped by the craftsman or student with limited knowledge of mechanics and mathematics. There are many things which could be more thoroughly treated, but I have thought it better to sacrifice further discussion to my main purpose, viz., simplicity and utility. I must confess my indebtedness in many respects to the following works, to which I refer the inquirer for further information: Blaine sH ydraulics, Prof. Perry sA pplied Mechanics, Prof. Cotterill sA pplied Mechanics, Weisbach sQ eschichte desM aschinen, etc. I would call especial attention to the chapters on Tidal Power, Sewage, and Water Supply, chiefly derived from experience.
