The Duty of Altruism is a book written by Ray Madding McConnell and originally published in 1910. The book explores the concept of altruism, which is the belief in putting the needs and well-being of others before one's own self-interest. McConnell argues that altruism is not only a moral duty, but also a practical necessity for the betterment of society. Throughout the book, McConnell provides examples and arguments for why altruism should be embraced and practiced. He contends that altruism is essential for creating a harmonious and just society, and that it is the responsibility of individuals to act selflessly for the greater good. The Duty of Altruism also explores the relationship between altruism and religion, as McConnell draws on various religious teachings to support his arguments. He argues that many religions emphasize the importance of helping others and that this should be a guiding principle in one's life. Overall, The Duty of Altruism is a thought-provoking exploration of a timeless concept that remains relevant today. It challenges readers to consider the importance of selflessness and to reflect on how they can contribute to the betterment of society. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. There is no more perplexing problem before the philosophy of conduct than the search for a sufficient ground of the ob Ugation to be altruistic. That himianity acknowledges the existence of this obligation is plainly shown by a psychological analysis and historical survey of the phenomena of moral consciousness. This investigation undertakes a study of the attempted solutions of the problem. The most common way of trying to solve the problem is altogether unsatisfactory. It shows, first, that the man who fulfills his duties to himself by taking good care of himself is also fulfilling his duties to others in becoming capable of rendering greater service to them, that is, in becoming a better providing father and husband and a more intelligent and useful citizen; and secondly, that the man who fulfills his duties to others by serving them, being a good husband, father, and citizen, is at the same time fulfi Uing his duties to himself in enlarging his Ufe. Such a procedure as this merely evades the problem.
