In the winter of 1812-13, little circle of young children were accustomed to be amused by short Tales, made at the moment, for their amusement and instruction. The beneficial efiP ects which these littleS tories produced in the conduct of the young listeners, first gave the idea of writing the following Tale; thus hoping to impress a more permanent advantage. In this hope an anxious Mother dedicates this little work to her six beloved Children. Devonshire, A pril 20,1814.
