But in 1849 I was only seventeen years old, too young, so my mother thought, to make the hard trip into the new country. Moreover I had no money with which to buy the necessary equipment. I had located 120 acres of land but it was not valuable, for everyone had land to sell and few cared to buy. But in 1852 when I reached my twentieth year my mother and elder brother aided me in raising the money for my equipment thus making it possible for me to realize my fondest hope. There was but one man in the county who had ready money which he was willing to loan. He was a retired naval officer who had been wounded at the Battle of Vera Cruz in the Mexican War. He was a good friend of my mother's and she induced him to loan me one hundred dollars on good land security, with interest at 30 per cent per annum. In 1852 there were but three routes by which one could reach the Pacific Coast and a man's choice of the three depended absolutely upon the amount of money which he had on hand for the journey. If he had $300 he might take the railroad to New York or the boat down the Mississippi to New Orleans, then a steamer to Nicaragua or the Isthmus of Panama, cross to the Pacific and take another steamer up the Coast to California, the entire trip requiring about thirty days. If he had $150 he might ship on a sailing vessel, go down the Atlantic Coast around Cape Horn and reach the Golden Gate in any time from three to six months according to the Reason.
