Excerpt: ...emancipationists, yet so powerful and despotic was the slaveholding class, and so indifferent were the masses of the people, that Washington, writing to Lafayette in 1785, only two years after the close of the war fought in the name of human equality, confessed that " petitions for the abolition of slavery presented to the Virginia legislature could scarcely obtain a hearing."
