HOSIE, THE NEW FOREST FAWN. 177 One afternoon, a labourer in the employ of this farmer--the latter I was told was a broken down tallowchandler--came to me to say that his master was out after the doe for the purpose of killing her, and that I had better keep her at home. For this, then, there was no other remedy than to confine the doe, which I did, and eventually gave her away to a lady who applied for her, but whom I did not know. The present Lady Hopetoun had also a fawn from the New Forest, which I obtained for her, and this dear, graceful thing used to follow her about like a dog. It came to a sad end, through and by the ferocity, too, of a pointer I had given to her father, and which with other pointers had very ill-advisedly been put into a sort of court wherein the doe slept every night, a very high paling having been run up between them. In summer, when this fine young dog was short cf work, I think he was the most superb pointer I ever saw; as he could see the doe, of course his youthful spirit inclined him to mischief. One day Lady Hopetoun, from her room window, heard the most fearful cries, which, something assured her, could only come from her tame doe. Running down at once, excited by the most dreadful apprehensions, she entered the court just in time to see her pet in the agonies of death, and the pointer seated on her body.
