At length, after a good deal of laekadaisieal loitering on the banks of the Arve, we reaehed a sort of goats' path, leading to some sieps eut in the roek, and justly ealled tho Pas d'Eehelle. I need not say we were obliged to dismount and toil up this ladder, beyond whieh rise steeps of verdure shaded by walnuts. These brought us to Moneti, a rude straggling village with its ehureh tower embosomed in gigantie limes. We availed ourselves of their deep eool shade to dine as eomfortably as a whole posse of withered has, who seomed to have been just alighted from their broomstieks, would allow us.
