Must we seek a Justification according to the Doctrine of Christianity, or according to the Principles of Jewish Rabbins, who blaspheme Jesus of Nazareth, and deny the Trinity? They say, a Man is ro expiate his Sins by himself, or by his Doings or Sufferings. This is either by the Afflictions which he undergoes, or the Evils which he suffers j or by his Vertues and Good Warty, which he performs, particularly by Jrpentance. As to Afflictions they reckon some to be necessary J which are inflicted by another: They term those voluntary which they lay upon themselves. They regard not only their own Afflictions, but those of others, its well Men as Animals. Death is the Substance of all Evils in their Esteem, and whether it be their own, or another's, they make it an Expiation sot Sins; Hence is the common Saying amongst them, Let Death he the Expiation of Sin! Let my Death he an Expiation for my Sin! or let bis Death be an Expiation for his Sin! They pray thus also for Malefactors, who fall by the Hands of civil Justice; all which they refer to ...
