Another memorial-stone between the Cathedral and the Pyramid shows the words: «Bernardino Rivadavia 1780--1880», and was placed there on the occasion of the centennial birthday of this great statesman. On the 25 of May and the 9 of July, the chief pol itical feastdays of the Argentines, the plaza serves for military parades, popular amusements and fireworks. On two sides of the plaza are stands for coaches and most of the Tramway-lines pass here almost at every minute. The Plaza 25 de Mayo is separated from the Plaza Victoria only by the Recoba vieja, in the middle of which a triumphal arch forms a passage. It is bounded by the Calle Rivadavia with the Colon Theatre, Calle Balearce with Governmeut Palace and General Post Office, Calle Victoria with Congress Hall and Calle Defensa resp. Recoba vieja. In the corner of Calles Victoria and Balcarce the new costumhouse is situated. Formerly it was called Plaza de la Fortaleza and the executions took place there. Although of a more modest appearance than the Plaza Victoria, it is preferred as a place of meeting by the people. It is planted with nice and partly shadowy trees, has two fountains and a very nice but rather unproportionate equestrian statue of General Belgrano, one of the heroes during the wars of liberation from the Spaniards. The Plaza de IiOrea has its name from Isidor Lorea, to whom resp: his heirs still belong a great part of the surrounding houses and who died with his wife, defending his house during the English invasion. The plaza served formerly up to the year 1825 as halting place for the carts, coming to town with the produce of the country, as well as market place for the Indians, who sold there their articles: Salt, Tissues...
