Excerpt: ... AN E S S A Y O N FIELD FORTIFICATION. CHAP. I. Of Works, and how to trace them on the ground, SECTION I. THERE are several kinds of fieldworks, such as fleches, redouts of four or more sides, star-forts, tetes-depont, entrenchments behind which troops encamp, &c. It is not at all necessary that an officer, who means to trace out any of these B. works, Works, should do it mathematically, which requires both calculations, and proper instruments; there is a method much more easy, less complicated, and entirely dependirig upon practice. Let a cord be provided, one end set off in twenty divisions, a foot each, and the remainder in toises of ten feet; a few small pickets are likewise necessary, to mark the angles; and thus you have every thing requisite for tracing out field-works. If one is obliged to construct them in the night, a rope of straw may be made use of, as it is more eafily distinguished. SECT. II. The best defense, in works that are. flanked, or where one side is defended by the fire of another, is that formed by «. right-angles ; it is therefore necessary When one right line stands upon another, so as ttj make the angles on either side equal, they are called right-angles, and the upright line, the perpendicular. to to know how to lay them down with exactness. Twelve feet of the above cord, are sufficient for this operation: Let us suppose a line A B, at the two extremi-Plate ties of which it is required to lay down Fig. a right-angle to the froht. At the extre-' mity A, set off three feet of the cord c d, and four feet to the front de: join e c with the retraining live feet of the cord (the end of it being fixed at c), and you have the right-angle f required. Proceed just in the same manner in laying down If the extremities of the perpendic...
