SIMPLE AND SHABP--A "SLAM"--MISCELLANEOUS CABD TEICKS. Theee are two principal methods used to perform conjuring tricks with playing cards; one is by calculation, generally according to a prearranged formula of words; the other by dexterity of manipulation, commonly termed sleight of hand. The first of these methods has for centuries supplied interesting problems to the mathematician and other students of the exact sciences; while the second has afforded equal facilities to the wonder-working conjuror, and the cheating sharper. As very curious and little known exercises of human ingenuity, the first of these methods demands an early notice, and a trick called the ten duplicates furnishes a good example. The problem is this, twenty cards being arranged in pairs, face upwards on the table, to tell whatever pair any of the bystanders may think upon. Any twenty cards may be taken at random out of the pack, and being placed in ten pairs, the person who performs the feat, asks the company to select, mentally, any pairs they may individually choose, warning them to pay particular attention to the cards forming each pair thought upon, as they would next be seen in a different arrangement.
