Excerpt: ... PROCEEDINGS OF SOCIETIES. W. P. I. Chapter Of The Society Of The Sigma Xi. The second regular meeting of the W. P. I. Chapter of the Society of the Sigma Xi was held in Room 1 of the Electrical Building, Wednesday evening, Jan. 25, 1911. The following papers were presented: A paper by Professor W. L. Jennings, on "Rubber and its Synthesis." Professor Jennings outlined the production of rubber and showed many samples of rubber obtained from different trees in various parts of the world. He also explained the possibility of producing rubber synthetically on a commercial basis, and explained the difference between artificial rubber and synthetic rubber. The second paper of the evening by Professor H. B. Smith, was on "Some Engineering Developments in the Electric Field of Force." Professor Smith outlined the difficulties of the problem of transmission of high potentials and explained the results of his efforts in the attempt to solve this problem. Some very interesting and unique devices were shown both in the lecture room and in the laboratory. Physics Colloquia. The Physics Colloquium meets on Tuesday afternoon at the usual hour, instead of on Monday as has been the custom. The subjects treated at recent meetings have been as follows: Dr. Duff--"A continuous-flow method for determining latent heat of fusion"; Dr. Hull--"Mass and charge of ions emitted by hot metals"; Dr. Ewell--"The charge of an electron," "Potential Differences"; Mr. Nims--"Relation between wave distortion and life of incandescent lamp-filaments." W. P. I. Branch Of The American Association Of Electrical Engineers. The fourth regular meeting, Jan. 27,1911, of the Branch was addressed by Mr. W. D.
