Excerpt: ... LETTER VI. Oughterard, Co. Galway, September 16, 1851. We left Cong Rectory on Monday morning, in company with Mr. Moore, retracing our steps as far as Carnamona school-house, on the banks of Lough Corrib, where we found a boat with a crew of converts waiting to convey us to Castlekerke. A meeting of the converts in this neighbourhood had been summoned. In about two hours we arrived at this beautiful and interesting spot. We met Mr. O'Callaghan on our arrival, and we were informed that the school-house was again locked up, and that there was no admission for worship, as was intended. The meeting took place in the open air, in a field close by. The crowded boats coming across from the opposite side, and from the neighbourhood of Maam Hotel, enlivened the scene. Amongst the 250 converts who were there assembled, were some respectable farmers, who, with their families, came on their jaunting-cars. I spoke to one of them, who, in former days, had been an active demagogue and the great leader of Repeal in his district; but when he embraced the Protestant faith, his political as well as religious views had changed. We saw and spoke to the girl who had been the first scholar in 1842, in the school established here, from whence all we have seen in West Galway has proceeded. She is now a teacher of a school herself. The school, which is held, when the weather permits, on the side of a rocky mountain, has only been opened six weeks, having been closed eighteen months, in consequence of having been ejected from Castlekerke school-house by the landlord.
