Excerpt: ... LECTURE VII. DANIEL, VI. 5. "Then said these men, we shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God." In our last Lecture we considered some of the wonderful predictions relating to the kingdom of Babylon, and were instructed that the city of the Chaldeans suddenly passed from its original possessors into the hands of an invading foe; and we are therefore prepared to follow Daniel in his eventful history, and to contemplate his character under the circumstances resulting from a change in the government. The prophet is still in Babylon; but, in common with others who escaped the recent perils, he is now subject to the conqueror. The empire is Medo-Persian. Darius, the uncle of Cyrus, who was introduced in the preceding chapter, is here again connected with our subject. Soon after his settlement upon the throne of his extended dominion, which was ahout the year 538, before the commencement of the Christian era, it is related concerning him--" It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom; and over these, three presidents, of whom Daniel was first; that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage. Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm." The king was evidently desirous to have the affairs of his vast territory conducted upon principles founded in wisdom, that there might be no loss in his revenue, and that justice, according to his notion, might be duly administered.
