"Now, fellows," cried James Lambert, when they had finished dinner,' "now for a glorious game at ball!" He led the way to quite a large field a short distance back of the village, where they found a considerable number of boys already collected. It was a first-rate place for their game, the ground being level and hard, and had evidently been used a good deal. "Hurrah! Come on! Come on!" they all shouted together, as soon as they spied our three companions. "Here, let Jim Lambert and Tom Robinson choose up for sides and first choice!" cried one. GETTING READY. 49 "'No, it's my turn, Tom Eobinson chose up last time!" cried another. "Oh, never mind, Gus; what difference does it make?" said a third. "Well, go ahead," said Gus. The bat was brought, and all gathered around. Jim tossed up the bat, and Tom caught it. Then hand over hand, first one, and then the other boy, till the end was in Jim's grip, just enough of it for him to feel with his thumb and fore-finger. "He can't swing it!" said one. "Try it, Jim," said another, "I tell you he can!" "He can't!" "He can!" "Hold on tight, Jim!" "Well, just get out of the way, and give me a chance, will you 3" said Jim. Very carefully he did it, three times around his head, fair! And so Jim had the first choice. "I choose George Belton." "I thank you, Jim," said George, "but I'd rather not play in this game." Here there was a terrible noise, every one urging George to play; but George was firm, and the boys were finally satisfied by his promising to act as umpire, and keep account of the runs.
