Excerpt: ... nature, goodness is the chief of all perfections, and therefore it belongs to God, and there are some footsteps of it in the creatures, and therefore it is much more eminent in God. The goodness of God extends towards all his creatures, but more especially to man; towards man it is manifested, first, in their formation, Gen. ii. 7; secondly, in having designed them for happiness, Gen. ii. 8,9, Jer. xxix. 11; thirdly, in their preservation, Job vii. 20, x. 12; fourthly, in providing for their present support and comfort, Ps. xxiii. 1, Ps. ciii. 5; fifthly, in giving them the pleasures of domestic life, Job. xxii. 18; sixthly, in delivering them out of affliction, or supporting them under it, Ps. ix. 9, Ps. cxlvi. 5; seventhly, iu forgiving their iniquities, Exo. xxxiv. 6, 7, Job xxxiii. 28; eighthly, in giving them instruction and assistance, Psa. xvi, 7, Jer. iii. 4, Luke xi. 13, Eph. iii. 16; ninthly, in giving them the hope of immortality, Ps. xvi. 10, 11, and xlix. 15; tenthly, in the christian institution of religion, John xx. 31. The consideration of divine goodness is a powerful motive to several duties; it should lead us, first, to love God; secondly, to fear him; thirdly, to obey his laws; fourthly, to repent of our sins; fifthly, to put our trust in him; sixthly, to be content in every condition; seventhly, to imitate it; eighthly, to be thankful. GOODWILL, properly consists in that desire whereby we wish well to other men. Rules to be observed in reference to this quality are, first, the true and principal good things are to be wished both to others and to ourselves; what is meant is spiritual good things, and other titings only as they may further these, 3 John 2; secondly, no good is to be wished to one man, which may by any means be prejudici...
