In the first place I shall present the Newtonian theory in the sublime language of an eminent astronomer. 'The planets are retained in their orbits by th« united operation of the centripetal force, by which a body is attracted to the centre of gravity; an'l the centrifugal force, by which it endeavors to persevere in a straight line. These two forces mutually balancing each other like action and reaction, retain the planets in their orbits, and compel them to make their respective revolutions through the azure field of space.' Mr. Whiting, in his large volume, makes clear distinction between these two forces--"The centrifugal force is the reaction, or resistance a moving body exerts to prevent its being turned out of it c irect course, and by which it endeffvovs to continue its rectilineal direction and uniform velocity, this force is opposite and equal to the centri force, because action and reaction are equal'andcontrary." Now, I shall undertake to prove that Newton theory on this point is, by all philosophers, er received than understood. Let Abcd ( fig. 1 at end of book ) represi the elliptical orbit of a planet, DC the transverse, and Ab the conjugate diameters, v the upper focus, and F the lower, in which the sun is placed.
