Not illustrated.1771 Excerpt: ... § 1991, VI. Of Sternutatories, or medicines which provoke sneezings. These occasion some evacuation of lymph, and therefore ought to be taken notice of. § 1992. The operation of this fort of evacuants does not much diminish the general mass of lymphatic humours: Yet they are sometimes of signal service against some distempers of the head, where there is a coldand moist Intemperies of the brain; and may administer great relief to the patient, as they make a quick evacuation from the parts principally affected; and therefore in such cases should be advised. § 1993. They are proper in all sleepy diseases; as they stimulate the circulation of the blood through the vessels of the brain, and promote a brisker flow of the nervous fluid into the organs of the fenses. § 1994. VII. Expectorants, or medicines which promote an evacuation of lymphatic humours from the Lungs by spitting, must be reckoned among the medical instruments, by which the quantity of the lymph may be diminished. § 1995. These are especially proper and needful whenever the air vesicles of the lungs have lymphatic humours excreted and lodging in them. § 1996. They are therefore much wanted in the humourous or wet asthma, and in the confluent fmall,pox, and higher degrees of the distinct kind. § 1997. Sometimes an evacuation of lymphatic humours from the lungs happens spontaneously, both in the fmall,pox, and in some asthmas: and considerable quantities have been discharged this way, &c. § 1998.
