Fig. 226 illustrates a jig in the Ludwig Loewe shops for setting cutters-used for making the teeth in spiral mills. It comprises a graduated beam with a fixed jaw A, and a movable jaw B. The graduations on the beam give the diameter of the cutters to lie Fig. 229.--Link Type of Jig. milled, so that, when the movable jaw is clamped to a given graduation, one element js fixed. The other--the position of the cutter--is determined by the notch in the fixed jaw A, and when the machine its set by those two positions, the work can he commenced; (Hid continued without any experimental cuts being required. The hole in the sliding jaw takes bushings that lit the arliors on which the cutters are placed to l»e milled. A good many devices have been schemed to permit of a milling machine attendant fixing work on one end of a jig, while the machine is milling similar pieces at the end opposite; an idea which is sometimes utilised on double-headed planers. The advantage lies chiefly in forgings and castings, which, being more or less rough and uneven, take more time in their adjustments than pieces of sheet metal, or pieces partly machined would do. An example of extremely tine work in gang milling is seen in Fig. 'I'll, done in the shops of A. Herliort Ltd. It is the cuttinir of slots in burners for gas fires. Large numbers of slots were cut in one traverse, the widest burner having 120 slots, requiring the fitting of 120 saws on one arlior. The difference in time between this and cutting single slots is enormous. The photo in Fig. 228 illustrates profile milling on a Herbert machine, the work consisting of shaping the edges of the links for chain conveyors, two of which are seen ...
