It appears this was the first beginning of our Lord's teaching by parables, expressly so delivered and properly so called. These parables are Seven in number--the first of the Seven--the sower forms as it were an introduction to the whole;--the other six consists of three pairs, the second and seventh,--the third and fourth,--and the fifth and sixth, correspond to each other, setting forth the same truths, but with some diversity. 4." By the wayside'--By the side of the path of the field about to be sown. I1." Mysteries'--The kingdom of heaven has its secrets. (See Rom. xvi., 25, 26),--generally applied in the New Testament to truths which have formerly been hidden, but now made known. This word is not used in Scripture in its classical sense of religious secrets, but in the sense of things of purely Divine Revelation--and usually things darkly announced under the Ancient Economy; and during all that period darkly understood, but fully published under the Gospel. (1 Cor. ii., 6-10; Eph. iii., 3-9). But these are only revealed to the humble diligent hearer. 12. In this saying of our Lord is summed up the revealing and concealing properties of this parable. "For whosoever hath "--i.e., keeps as a thing which he values. "To him shall be given and he shall have more abun"dance "--he will be rewarded by an increase of what he so much prizes.
