Tiberius, with another army, returned to Germany, completely conquering the enemy, for which a triumph was awarded him. The Emperor, Augustus Cassar, was getting old, and was often very ill. So he sent for all his friends and for Tiberius, his adopted son, and talked very seriously to them. He gave much good advice to Tiberius, telling him how to govern the people when he was dead. He died soon afterwards very peacefully, regretted by all his subjects, whom he had made so happy and contented while he lived. Augustus Caesar was the first Emperor of Rome, and had attained the age of seventy-six years when he died. CHAPTER XXIII. TIBERIUS Cjesar. No sooner was Augustus dead, than Tiberius took possession of the throne and empire. At first he did not appear to be wicked or cruel; but the murder of Agrippa, the grandson of Augustus,-of whom he was jealous, and whom he ordered to be executed, proved that he was so in reality. Sometime after the death of Agrippa, a slave of the young prince's, who was of the same age and resembled him in looks, pretended that his master was not dead, and that he was Agrippa himself. When he heard of it, Tiberius was much alarmed, and sent for the slave to question him. He saw that he was like Agrippa, and being fearful lest the people should endeavour to dethrone him and crown the slave Emperor instead, he caused him to be conveyed to some secret place and there murdered. The next of whom Tiberius was jealous was Germanicus, who had gone with him to Germany, and who, as I have told you, was his nephew. Augustus had made Tiberius promise to adopt Germanicus for his son, that he might reign when Tiberius was dead. Now the soldiers, who loved Germanicus, ...
