The Nineteenth Century The nistory of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, from the close of the Napoleonic wars to the present, has been one of both intensive and extensive growth, with the emphasis increasingly upon the latter. This expansion has been directed by the capitalistic and banking aristocracies which in all advanced countries have to a high degree centralized the forces of the machine age into powerful national states. So wide has been the area of backward countries over which the nationalistic capitalisms might expand, and so exhaustless has seemed the intensive development, that a blind faith in a permanent democracy based on private property econrmics has been readily entertained. That society was virtually repeating on a world scale the expansion and integration tendencies that the tiny empires of the ancient Mediterranean world experienced, was scarcely dreamed. Through the rapid growth of new properties, the aggressive could rise to fortune more easily than ever before in history, so that to the uncritical mind equality of opportunity seemed to be permanently established.
