The use of the al1. of uitium and beneficium, governing the gen. of a noun denoting something without life, is especially common in Sen. (see 53. 11 n.): it is known to Cicero and Caesar, but was probably a colloquial use. 1. 4. quid mihi futurum est Cic. Att. 10. 12. 1 has the same phrase: cp. Ter. Haut. 404 quid tibi est?' what's come to you?' They also said quid me futurum est, quite as if futurum were the fut. pte. of fieri: cp. Ter. Phorm. 137, Caeci1. 180 R. 1. 5. aetatis meae gen. of description, 'of my own age'. saxa of buildings seems rare in prose: cp. however the technical expr. saxum quadratum. § 2. 1. 8. retorridi See Intr. p. xlvi. It is joined with aridus in 86. 18, with breuis, infelix in Ira 3. 15. 4. tristes et squalidi technical again: the opposite would be laeti et nitidi: cp. Lucr. 2. 594 nitidas fruges arbustaque laeta. 1. 10. iurat per genium meum The Genius or Juno was appealed to in entreaty (Hor. Ep. 1. 7. 94, Tib. 4. 5. 8, Petr. 75) or strong assertion (Tib. 4. 13. 15, Petr. 62, Iuu. 2. 98). In the second Petr. passage we have the actual words used: si mentior, genios uestros iratos habeam. 1. 12. quod intra nos sit 'it mustn't go beyond you and me': cp. B. 3. 10. 2 beneficia intra tacitam duorum conscientiam latent, Plin. Ep. 3. 10. 4 cum affirmetis intra uos futura (of a composition which he is sending, but does not want to publish at present). Our 'between you and me' is exactly represented by Cicero's quod inter nos liceat dicere (Att. 2. 4. 1). posueram plupf., Sen. having gone back to the interview with the bailiff--'I knew all the time I had planted them'. § 3....
