Most players find little difficulty in remembering to play the Q, if they have Q 10 x, and a J is led. But if a player holds the 10 and 6, the 8 being led, will he remember that he holds a fourchette if the 7 and 9 have been played? Mr. H. Trumbull told me the only bad mistake he could accuse himself of in the play for the championship, was forgetting that he held fourchette, on an 8 led, with Q 7 2, losing a trick. There is a remarkable instance of not playing fourchette in the 2d trick of 24 b. It is played in 24 c under the same conditions. In 5 d, Y plays fourchette at the 2d trick. In 6 d, Y plays fourchette over the Q on the 9th trick. In 8 b, 9th trick, the 6 having been played, B has fourchette over the 7 led. In 12 b, at the 6th trick, B plays fourchette over the jjk 6, the 5 having been played. In 14 c, at the 3d trick, Z plays fourchette on the strengthening Jft Q, and at the nth trick, B plays fourchette on the 7, the 8 having been played. In 15 a, Z plays the fourchette in Clubs on the 4th trick. In 19 b, Z plays fourchette over the 8 of trumps on the 6th trick. In 10 d, the 8 having been played, Z should have covered the ▲ 9 at the 5th trick. Signalling for Trumps Second Hand on an adverse suit, is by some players regarded as dangerous, unless your cards are such that you can suppress the signal if the development is unfavorable. In No. 6 b, Y begins a signal in Diamonds, second hand, which he can suppress. He then begins another, which he completes, fourth hand, rather than win the trick.
