'"THIS is a fine model of contrite prayer, which has praise both for its preface and its conclusion. It begins by calling to remembrance God's former mercies of longsuffering and pardon, and then pleads that He would, in like manner, again show His mercy, and grant His salvation. So that it enheartens us to come to Him for cleansing, and does not embolden us to abide in sin, it is well thus to plead God's past manifestations of pardoning goodness. Thus, when we would hear what God the Lord will speak, let us take care that we listen to all He says, not hearkening only to His words of forgiveness and comfort, but also to His every dictate of righteousness, thankful that He speaks peace, and heedful that we turn not again to folly. Then follows a glowing picture of the paradise which salvation restores. The dark contrast which the world now presents to this description is very terrible; and, in regarding the widespread evil and all its woes, we feel our own insignificant littleness. But, lest we should therefore leave undone that which, by comparison, looks to be of so little moment, let us remind ourselves continually, that we are each one answerable for bringing about in our own selves, and in our personal influence, all the blessed results of truth and righteousness which are here set forth. PSALM lxxxvi. i--8. CONSIDER well the pleas, following fast one upon another, whereby this seeking one urges his suit before God. Thus he strengthens himself in his prayer by making mention of his poverty, the favour which has already been shown to him (margin), his trustful service, his habitual petition, wherein he lifts up his soul...
