"White squaw's father!" said Sekeetah, smiling good-naturedly, as she pointed to the ground with one hand, and laid her other cinnamon-coloured paw on my cheek, which must have been rather blue than white. "Your feyther was black eneuch, ony way," snorted Tib, with a grim theological reference that was quite thrown away on the squaw. My nurse never lost a chance of venting her ill-will upon the Indians; and it was perhaps just as well for all parties that they so seldom perceived the point of her remarks. No time was lost in getting into motion that morning. Breakfast did not delay us. The improvident Indians, who were accustomed to eat rapaciously when they could and to fast for days when need was, had consumed almost all the store of provisions. A piece of meat about the size of an egg was all that remained to be served out to each of us. My share was so fat, that, hungry as I should have been in such a keen air, and after so much exercise, I could do no more than taste it. It began to be too plain that I was not likely to keep up with the party much longer. I could hardly walk this morning, but our hard-hearted or thick-skinned taskmasters would make no allowance for my weakness. I had to look forward to sinking helplessly on the ground, and then to be left to die in the snow of cold or starvation. How cruel seemed that pure whiteness that had hid the face of the earth, and suddenly made hoary the heads of the half-stripped trees! I could see no beauty in it at such a time, till Tib pointed out to me that in the soft surface every step left a record of our path to guide the pursuers--if, indeed, they were...
