We would stand in awe of that power to which nothing is impossible; we would reverence that wisdom which no complexity can bewilder; we would adore that immaculate purity before which the very angels stand chargeable with folly.--But thou art a God of mercy, not less than of majesty,--of infinite, exhaustless, most tender mercy. Thou hast graciously revealed thyself as a Father,--as our Father--our reconciled Father in Christ Jesus; thou callest us by the name of sons and daughters; and we are encouraged to come to thee as children to a loving and most compassionate Father. Of the largeness of thy paternal goodness, we have enjoyed fresh and delightful evidence this day. In our preserved health--in our wants plenteously supplied--in our renewed opportunities of mental and moral improvement--in our common mercies as a household, and our several mercies as individuals;--we trace the same gracious care which has upheld us from our earliest breath--even thy care, O thou best of Fathers, and of friends.--Nor are temporal mercies, all that demand our praise. Hast thou not this day spoken to us anew in thy word I Hast thou not permitted us to approach thee in prayer I Hast thou not addressed us by the voice of conscience--thereby giving us a merciful admonition of our danger when tempted to go astray, and a sweet reward of selfapproval in the discharge of duty I O may such unwearying goodness make us ashamed of our mgratitude and unprofitableness.
